Fees & Guidelines

Writing for Publication

Editing Gallery is ready to help you succeed in finding your writing niche in the literary marketplace. Here are some general guidelines that we ask you to follow when submitting your work.

Novels

First things first-make sure your query, cover letter, and synopses are of high quality. Editing Gallery can help revise or complete your introduction to make it more inviting to a publishing house editor.

Submission Standards and Guidelines

Your submission packet must be packaged according to the specific instructions of the agent or editor that will be doing the review.

  • You may be asked for a query letter, synopses, or chapter outline and sample chapters from your book. Each piece has its own industry-wide conventions and specific techniques.
  • Your manuscript must be double-spaced with each page containing approx. 250 words per page. Standard format and standard font (Times New Roman with a 12 size font).
  • Familiarize yourself with the category or genre of your book so that you know what the editor/agent is going to expect. Make sure your book has in-depth characterization with emotion and sensory detail, and develop a strong voice that will catch the ear of the reader. The plot needs to develop a story arc that reaches fruition.

Screenplays

There are tricks to writing screenplays and, if you have a great idea, a screenplay can come together quite quickly. To submit a screenplay you will need a short synopsis, your writing qualifications, and the finished screenplay. Keep in mind screenplays need to be attention grabbing, have a three-act story, and an awesome ending.

Marketing

Editing Gallery can help you with every step in the process of writing from story conception to the final product. We can give advice on the best market for your work, help you create a marketing package and also help you find the agent best suited for your book.

Articles, Essays, and Short Stories

When writing with the hopes of being published in a specific magazine, newspaper, or journal, please make sure to research the publisher's guidelines for an article, essay, or short story. Familiarize yourself with their preferences on word count, content, style, and slant. Check with their website for further details or you can also look in publisher directories such as Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market, Directory of Literary Publications, Novel and Short Story Writer's Market, or Writer's Market.

Submissions to Editing Gallery

When submitting your work, please follow these guidelines:

  • 12 point font in Times New Roman. Query and cover letters need to be single-spaced with double spacing between paragraphs. All manuscripts are double-spaced. Please have one-inch margins with approx. 250 words per page.
  • Always enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for any responses.
  • E-mail submissions are accepted.
  • Get to know the writing in your genre or category and make sure that you are familiar with the details of your submission. For example, if your article, essay, or short-story is under 1000 words than a query is not necessary. If you are writing a manuscript that is over 100 pages, publishers generally want a query first before they see the whole book.

Editing Fees

Editing fees are based on the writer's experience. Newer writers often receive a better rate by opting for the page rate, whereas a writer who has been writing and successfully publishing or is close to publishing would receive a better return by opting for the hourly rate.

  • $9 per page for a partial fiction manuscript (100 pages or less)
  • $7 per page for a full fiction manuscript
  • $75 per hour for established writers
  • Discounts given to clients who are referred by current clients or agents
